Background
Murray Darling Palimpsest (MDP) builds on an artistic heritage
dating back to the Mildura Sculpture Prizes of the 1960s,
the Sculpture Triennials of the 1970s and 80s and more recently
the SunRISE 21 Artist in Industry project (1998 – 2001)
and Mildura Palimpsest expositions held between 1998 and 2003.
To support the continued growth of this project, Murray Darling
Palimpsest has now been created to encompass the entire Murray
Darling basin.
Philosophy
Murray Darling Palimpsest recognises that art can help change
attitudes. By linking artists with ‘host’ organisations
in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia
and the ACT, MDP will provide opportunities for artists and
others to produce new works that promote discussion and debate
around one of the country’s most pressing environmental
and social issues: the future of the Murray Darling basin.
Objectives
Encourage communities, organisations and individuals throughout
the basin to participate in a collaborative manner.
Develop valuable partnerships with regional galleries
and other hosts locally, nationally and internationally.
Provide “A meeting place” to debate common issues
and share creative ideas.
Embrace concepts of reconciliation and cultural custodianship
to respect the land and the memories it contains.
Promote shared visions and goals and providing inspiration
to explore and respond to current issues.
Outcomes
A biennial Murray Darling Palimpsest exposition.
A biennial Murray Darling Palimpsest symposium through La
Trobe University.
Regular Murray Darling Palimpsest workshops/seminars.
A web site where discourse continues before and after each
event.
A catalogue profiling Murray Darling Palimpsest exposition.
